Local Love: Big Mac and Little Lu’s

Trying to enjoy seafood in our beautiful-but-VERY-landlocked state can be a bit of a fool’s errand.  The options can be sketchy, and far-from-fresh; and the preparations sadly often range from disappointing to just plain destroyed.

Which is what makes Big Mac and Little Lu’s oh so very special, indeed.

When the sun-drenched, welcoming space opened in February of 2013, I confess it was a run-don’t-walk situation for me.  It all came down to the lobster roll.  Much as I had steam-rolled Steuben’s for the same reason the week it opened when we lived in the city, I NEEDED a lobster roll.

That first day I was chatting excitedly with the bartender while waiting for my roll, and a very friendly young woman started telling me the story behind the restaurant. I was in the presence of “Big Mac,” one of the two daughters of owners Paul and Ashley Brock who lend their names to the restaurant and market.

Did you see that “and market”  part? That is an important detail, don’t just run by it.

When Paul and Ashley moved the family here from a previous living situation that included Florida and the Caribbean, the lack of fresh seafood was a such an issue for the family, that they eventually decided to remedy the situation themselves and open a seafood market.  Personal relationships with the captains and fishermen help the family assure fresh, quality product.  So you can pop in and check the mouth-watering display case and take home the freshest seafood around.   Blessedly, they decided to expand the idea from just the market, and add a restaurant in for good measure.  (And it is such very, VERY good measure.)

The preparation here is as important as the product – these folks know what they are doing, and you taste that knowledge in each bite.  The lobster bisque reminds me of Alioto’s at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco – hot and rich and silky and full lobstery goodness.  The ceviche created an “incident” that almost ended in a hand-stabbing with a fork when a friend and I both went for the last chunk (ordered another one – clearly we needed it.)   Junior is a HUGE fan of the fish bites (and mommy sneaks some when he is watching the lobster tank, shhh.)  Or pick from the list of fish flown in this morning and have the Brock’s Fish Entree – they will cook whatever you pick however you like.  Not sure?  The staff is warm, friendly, and knowledgable, so just ask and they will guide your Colorado self straight  to seafood greatness.  If you aren’t feeling the seafood – they have added some great locally raised beef to the menu as well (and because HELLO – surf and turf!)

All of that being said – get the lobster roll (don’t worry, you’ll be back and you can mix it up with each visit.)  It is INSANELY tasty and stuffed to uber-overflowing with huge, perfectly-dressed chunks of sweet, firm, perfect lobster.  Dip the fresh, crispy “whale chips” into the housemade pepper jelly that is on each table.  Trust Keri.

The Brocks have built something special out here in the north ‘burbs – as unique and genuine as the family itself is.  We are so lucky to have them here.

Special Delivery

I confess, my list of “Crap I Can’t Get in The Suburbs” is much shorter than I anticipated when we planted our flag in this uber-green little square of suburbia over a year ago.
I begrudgingly admit that. (I’d never admit it to The Mr., but to you? Ok.)

(Here comes my big old BUT again.)

There is a food delivery option shortage issue about which I can no longer hold my (hungry) tongue.
Pizza, or Chinese.
Pizza, or Chinese.
Pizza or Chinese.

Don’t misunderstand, you can get all kinds of wonderful TAKE OUT from delicious places that will box up faves from around the globe.

Except I am sick.
I seem to have ACTUALLY contracted the dreaded “man cold” that The Mr. claims to come down with each time someone sneezes within a mile radius of him, as I feel like he ACTS each time that happens.
We are talking “huddle-on-the-sofa-in-a-Jabba-the-Hut-sized-pile-of-blankies-and-whimper” sick.
“Call-the-hazmat-team-to-contain-the-used-tissues” sick.
Sicky sick sick.
Like whoa.

I don’t want to cook. I don’t even want to defrost one of the frozen casserole-bricks I have stashed in the freezer for just this type of situation. “Cooking” right now is pouring another glass of cherry 7-up.
Also, I am fairly certain that any public appearances at this point would be met with extreme disdain from those around me, as I have no intention of getting out of these flannel pants or doing anything else crazy like combing my hair or using some concealer to douse my Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer nose. Hell to the no.
If I saw me waiting for a to-go bag at the local sushi joint right now, I would turn right around and walk out, calling the heath inspector as I peeled out of the parking lot. I am super gross, yo.

HOWEVER, I am not one of those people who gets sick and loses her appetite. Quite the opposite. I lay in my blankie heap on the sofa in a NyQuil induced haze, drifting in and out of delicious dreams of the various food-stuffs I am convinced would cure me. Sometimes I get up enough energy to act on the desire, and defrost some green chile from the freezer – but inevitably I end up falling back on to the sofa and into a nap, only to find my defrosted, spoiled snack in the microwave hours later. (Eating food that has been hanging out in the “temperature danger zone” is NOT going to make me less sick, this I know.)

Who will bring me food? Yesterday I KNEW a cubano sandwich would FOR SURE have stopped this plague in its tracks. But that does not fall into the two categories that actually deliver a-way out here.
Pizza or Chinese.

I need a food truck hotline number that I can call in emergency situations – surely they would understand that a vat of white cheddar queso could mean the difference between life and death, right?


While we are at it, the liquor store at the end of our city block used to have a runner. Is it really too much to ask to have my Jack Daniels supply replenished? Mama needs a toddy tonight.

An open display of shameless begging request from a clearly dying woman (it really MUST be a “man cold”, eh?) someone, somewhere up here, open a joint that makes a little bit of everything and is willing to bring it to my door.

Bring me some more tissues while you are at it, k?

The New(ish) Normal. Just Sayin’.

Normal dinner “conversation” now includes things like:

-“Watermelon goes in our mouth, NOT down our underpants”

-“Well I didn’t think it was funny when Cailou did it either.”


-“Who put crayons in my wine?” (This is mostly a rhetorical question, although I haven’t totally ruled out The Mr.)

– “Don’t just lick the ketchup off… eat the cantaloupe too.” (Barf.)

– “It’s only good off Mommy’s plate? Can Mommy eat off your plate, then?” (That is a big “no” from The Little Emperor Jr, BTW.)

-“So honey, how was your – not on the floor! No more strawberries? Only Jello? With a fork? Daddy will you hand us a wipey, please?”

Sigh… adult conversation is uber-overated anyway, I’m sure.
